Da Nang and Hoi An: Exploring Central Vietnam

Da Nang and Hoi An are close to each other, but they are not the same kind of destination. Da Nang is a larger, modern coastal city centred around the Han River and a long stretch of coastline, while Hoi An is more concentrated around its historic town and the Thu Bon River.
For travellers staying in Da Nang, Hoi An is close enough to visit without changing accommodation. You can visit for part of a day, stay into the evening or make Hoi An a separate stop within a longer Central Vietnam trip.
Understanding the difference between the two makes it easier to decide how much time to give each, how to travel between them and whether Hoi An works better as a visit from Da Nang or as a place to stay.
Da Nang and Hoi An: What's the Difference?
Da Nang is a broad, modern city. Its beaches, river, central districts and outer areas spread across a much larger urban environment, giving you more distance to cover and more variation as you move around.
Hoi An is more concentrated, with its historic centre forming the heart of the destination. Its architecture, streets and riverside setting reflect the town's history as a trading port, while shops, restaurants and other businesses continue to operate within the historic area.
Da Nang's larger scale means you often move between different parts of the city, while Hoi An's more concentrated historic centre allows you to explore much of its main area on foot.
From Da Nang to Hoi An
Hoi An is around 30 kilometres south of Da Nang and the journey usually takes 40 to 60 minutes by road, depending on traffic and where you start.

A private transfer, taxi or ride-hailing service such as Grab Car can provide a direct and comfortable way to travel between Da Nang and Hoi An, particularly if you have luggage or are travelling with others. It can also be a practical option in hot or wet weather.
A Hoi An tour from Da Nang offers another approach if you would rather have the journey and some of the experience arranged for you. This can make sense for a day visit when you want to spend your time exploring rather than organising the individual parts of the trip. Morning and afternoon options are available, with the afternoon departure allowing you to explore Hoi An into the evening before returning to Da Nang.
The choice comes down to how much flexibility you want. Independent transport gives you more control over when you leave and return, while an organised experience can reduce the amount of planning involved.
Spending Time in Hoi An
A visit from Da Nang allows you to explore the historic centre without changing accommodation. You can walk through the old streets, explore the riverside, eat, browse the shops and stay into the evening if your transport allows.
Staying in Hoi An gives you more freedom over your schedule. You are not working around a return journey, so you can explore at different times of day, take a break and return to the historic centre later.
Where you stay also matters. Accommodation in or close to the historic centre puts the old town within easy reach, while places further out can provide more space and a quieter setting.
Da Nang and Hoi An in the Same Trip
Da Nang and Hoi An offer different sides of Central Vietnam and including both gives you a broader sense of the region without requiring a complicated itinerary.
Da Nang can work as your base for exploring the coast, the city and nearby destinations, with Hoi An close enough to add as a day or evening visit. If you have more time, staying in Hoi An lets you explore the historic town and its surroundings without having to plan around the journey back to Da Nang.
How you divide your time between the two depends on the kind of trip you want to create. The important thing is that you do not have to choose one over the other.
